[Online] MMORPG Dark Space Set for November Release - posted by Andy Grieser at 2:16 pm CDT

MMORPG "DARK SPACE" SET FOR NOVEMBER RELEASE
Retail version or massively multiplayer game to include bonus ships, ranking, one-month free subscription, and new soundtrack

WESTON, CT- October 25, 2002 - Got Game Entertainment, publisher of video games for PC and other platforms, today announced that the retail version of "DarkSpace", the massively multiplayer online RPG set in space and alive with star ships and diverse alien races, will hit retail shelves by the end of November 2002. The retail version will give players priority access to ships, prestige ranking, and a one-month free subscription, as well as feature a new and exclusive soundtrack by a veteran game composer.

Developed by Palestar, "DarkSpace" takes place in a universe splintered by intergalactic war. Humanity has split into two hostile factions, while a new hostile alien race advances into human space. In the midst of turmoil and civil unrest, players start as an ensign, piloting smaller craft and eventually working their way up to a fleet admiral, controlling a massive capital ship and plotting strategic maneuvers in one of the three initial factions.

"The retail version of DarkSpace will include a coupon for a free month," explained Richard Lyle, President of Palestar and Lead Programmer for "DarkSpace". "This coupon will give new players a higher starting rank which expands their choice of ships to command."

The soundtrack, exclusive to the retail version, was custom written for the project by Paul Baker and is loosely based on the orchestral music of Gustav Holst, composer of the "The Planets". Baker's other notable contributions include "Wing Commander" (3 and 4), "Kilrathi Saga", "Longbow AH-64", "Longbow: Flashpoint Korea", "Pacific Strike", and "Ultima 8". Cakewalk sequencing software and Kurzweil, Roland, and Gigastudio synths were used to create the music.

"There is just something about space that inspires great music," said Got Game Entertainment President, Howard Horowitz. "When you think about "Star Wars" or "2001: A Space Odyssey", you think about the music. We think the DarkSpace players will enjoy this soundtrack, as well."

[Community] Official Web Site for Etherlords II is Open for Business - posted by Andy Grieser at 7:25 am CDT

Official Web site for Etherlords II is open for business!

Quebec, Montreal. October 22, 2002 – The official Etherlords II website is open and ready for viewing. Strategy First and Nival Interactive announced in early June that they will be bringing Etherlords II to the North American market and now you can learn all about the sequel at; http://www.etherlords.com

“ In an unprecedented meeting today between the elders of the four races that inhabit the Etherworld, it was announced that a new website would be placed on the Internet here on Earth in order to provide ordinary humans more information about key people and places there. Commenting on the site, Octavius, a leading member of the Learned Council from the Kinets race said, “We wanted to dispel some of the myths about Etherlords II and of course encourage our tourism industry”. – Quote from the website

Etherlords II is the sequel to the innovative turn-based strategy game originally released in November 2001. Similar to Etherlords I , which was highly praised for its tactical depth and stunning graphics, Etherlords II promises to be even more spectacular, changing the emphasis of the game from simple exploration and resource gathering to a more enriching story-driven adventure.

Players control one of four races in a lavish 3D fantasy world, in which they will explore, and conquer territory, solve puzzles, and seek out enemies. Combat takes place in wonderfully detailed and expansive arenas and is based upon fantasy collectable card games in which the player must make tactical decisions on the types and combinations of spells and creatures to cast against their foes.

The sequel is based upon a new and enhanced narrative that lends itself to exploration and adventure. 4 new campaigns will offer 16 new creatures and over 30 new spells, including spells and creatures that can be wielded by all of the races.

A simplified interface and a thorough tutorial system enhances gameplay as well as new abilities, such as sailing, tunneling, teleporting, and an artifact editor for creating customized spells. As Heroes develop their skills they will change in appearance, giving the game more of a role-playing aspect.

In addition, players will find a map editor that allows anyone to create their own maps and combine them into entire campaigns. Added modes for one-on-one and team-based multiplayer duels on a new game server featuring auto-rating and recording will make on-line tournaments more captivating than ever before.

Strategy First is set to publish Etherlords II in Q2 2003 and Infogrames will exclusively distribute it.

[Education] Art Institute of CA New Degree in Game Programming - posted by Erich Becker at 10:19 am CDT

THE ART INSTITUTE OF CALIFORNIA – SAN FRANCISCO OFFERS
UNIQUE NEW DEGREE IN VISUAL & GAME PROGRAMMING

-Curriculum Trains Technical Artists for Video Game, Animation Industries-

SAN FRANCISCO (Oct. 22, 2002) – The Art Institute of California – San Francisco (www.aicasf.aii.edu) has announced it is now offering a new bachelor’s degree program in "Visual & Game Programming" designed to prepare the next generation of Technical Artists for the video game and animation industries.

After intensive training in the foundations of art and design, students in the program enter into the more technical areas of programming for 3-D animation. Students learn the essential skills to effectively solve technical problems and play the indispensable role of bridging between the technical programmer and the creative artist. With an advantage of having their artistic talent combined with the knowledge and skills of programming for 3-D development, shading, motion capture, and animation, the students will have an edge in finding a wide range of employment opportunities in the entertainment and game production industries. The curriculum helps train students for entry-level positions that may include Technical Artist, Technical Developer, Assistant Technical Director, 3-D Tools Programmer, Artist Wizard, Data Wrangler, Rendering Wrangler or Junior Technical Cinematic Artist.

An intensely hands-on program that combines traditional animation skills with technical skills, the program focuses on student ability to write, extend and modify programs/scripts for 3-D animation. Students will be introduced to the principles of programming, which enables them to enter into the world of shading development, motion capture management, and pipeline streamlining. They will learn programming and scripting tools such as Perl, C++, C-shell, MEL scripting, MAXScript, DirectX & OpenGL and become very familiar with different operating systems. The program lasts 12 quarters and contains 192 quarter credits, including 56 quarter credits in general education.

The curriculum was developed with input from game and animation industry veterans, including professionals from the International Game Developers Association, Electronic Arts, Acclaim, Red Storm Entertainment, Digital Domain, Pixar Animation Studios, PDI/DreamWorks, Microsoft, Stormfront Studios, BioWare and other companies.

"This is a really unique type of curriculum that teaches a range of skills used by technical artists on a daily basis," said Tom Miller, a Technical Director at Pixar and member of the school’s Program Advisory Committee. "New degree programs such as this one are helping to create new opportunities for people interested in developing their skills for the game and animation fields."

"To develop a game or animated feature film, it takes the work of both artists and programmers," explains Mary Clarke-Miller, Academic Director for the program at The Art Institute of California – San Francisco. "The artist creates characters, backgrounds, and other graphics to make the game visually appealing and exciting. The programmer creates programs and scripts to enable the various movements and interactions of characters and objects. For both sides to work effectively as a team, it is critical to have a third party known as a Technical Artist."

According to Clarke-Miller, the Technical Artist must have the artistic talent and abilities, and as importantly, be well versed in the technical aspects of the game or animation in order to be capable of comprehending the intent of the artistic creator and the technical needs to achieve the intended results of the game designers. With that unique understanding, the Technical Artist can customize the programming tools in a computer software application to best meet the needs of an individual production.

"The Visual & Game Programming degree is a perfect complement to our existing Game Art & Design program," said Caren Meghreblian, Ph.D., Dean of Education at The Art Institute of California – San Francisco. "While the Game Art & Design program is focused more on the creation of art used in games and animation, this Visual & Game Programming degree is focused on more of the technical side. Both of these programs are helping to prepare the next generation of computer animators, artists and technicians to fill employment niches in the animation and game fields."

The related Game Art & Design program at The Art Institute of California – San Francisco has received widespread attention from the game industry, media and students. Nearly 60 students are currently studying in the school’s Game Art & Design program, which started in January 2002.

Students may now enroll in the Visual & Game Programming or Game Art & Design program to start in the Winter 2003 quarter, which starts Jan. 13, by calling the school’s Admissions Department at (888) 493-3261 or (415) 865-0198. Or, visit www.aicasf.aii.edu or email aisfadm@aii.edu for more information.

Using familiar elements of classical mythology, Age of Mythology casts players as one of nine unique civilizations from ancient Greek, Norse and Egyptian mythologies. Players can reinforce their armies with mythological creatures like Cyclopes and Medusas or call upon the mighty powers of gods such as Zeus to rain down lightning bolts on unsuspecting enemies. Age of Mythology also incorporates Ensemble Studios' trademark features from previous Age of Empires games, including a compelling economic model, a massive army and battle system, unequaled artificial intelligence, random maps, intuitive gameplay and extreme attention to detail.

Age of Mythology's 3-D engine delivers impressive graphics in a fully 3-D environment, including beautiful waves and water, lifelike rolling terrain, realistic sunlight, and lush forests. Montreal, Quebec. October 16, 2002 – Publisher Strategy First and Developer Third Wire are pleased to announce that Strike Fighters: Project 1, the flight simulation that will have people lighting the fires under their PCs, has gone gold for a full North American release.

“We are very excited to have this game ready for full release,” says Steve Milburn, Director of Marketing for Strategy First. “I hope that everyone in and out of the flight sim community enjoys it as much as we do.”

From Tsuyoshi Kawahito (aka TK), the legendary lead designer behind Jane’s Longbow 2 and European Air War, Strike Fighters: Project 1 is set in the 1960s, a unique decade when aviation technology was still primitive, but advancing at a rapid pace. This historical era has been overlooked by flight sims – until now! Take control of some of the most renowned aircraft of the era, including the F-4 Phantom II, considered one of the most versatile combat aircraft of all time. Along with a historical timeframe, Strike Fighters: Project 1 has a thrilling Middle Eastern setting that puts gamers high above the now controversial desert sands.

Strike Fighters: Project 1 uses an all new “next generation” graphics engine that generates incredibly detailed images that transport you directly into the cockpit. But the ride doesn’t stop there! With its mod-friendly generator, Strike Fighters: Project 1 follows in the footsteps of games like Half-Life that offer gamers endless hours of new and exciting gameplay and replayability.

Strike Fighters: Project 1 will be on retail shelves nationwide on October 29th. For more information on Strike Fighters: Project 1, please visit www.strategyfirst.com.
