[Xbox] Games Xtreme Reviews Colin McRae Rally 3 (Xbox) - posted by Erich Becker at 3:02 pm CDT

Games Xtreme has posted a review of Colin McRae Rally 3 for the Xbox, check it out after reading the snippet below!

"The level of detail on the cars in the game really is staggering and it pushes the envelope of realism to one more notch, there are a number of break away parts on the vehicle as well - so you can lose that nice looking sponsored bumper or wheel arch. Lights break, the windows often spider as the glass takes an impact, cracking and finally shattering with a resounding crunch - you'll watch the wings of the car crumple and there are too many damage zones on your vehicle to list. We spent some time seeing how much damage we could inflict to the car on the single stage part of the game. I'd lost both back tires, no bonnet, my boot was gone and my back bumper was trashed. Smoke was pouring from the engine and the car's handling suffered like a drunken bull in a china shop."

[Xbox] Microsoft Announces Top Spin (Xbox) - posted by Erich Becker at 2:51 pm CDT

Microsoft Game Studios slams a cross-court winner with the announcement of “Top Spin” for Xbox

Have you ever wondered what it takes to be the world’s best tennis player? How about ripping a crosscourt winner on center court for championship point? You think you have the skills? Now you can find out.

Microsoft Game Studios today announced its first tennis title for the Xbox™ video game system is in development and will be available in the fall of 2003. Developed by Power and Magic Development, “Top Spin,” an Xbox exclusive and Xbox Live™ enabled tennis experience, will offer gamers and tennis fans a pulse-pounding glimpse into professional tennis.

“Top Spin,” featuring 16 tennis superstars, challenges each player to master all the shots including slices, lobs, drops and spins while playing on various surfaces including clay, hard court and grass. In addition, gamers can create their own tennis players to achieve superstardom complete with their own unique personalities. Do you prefer to play it cool, or are you more of a hot-head? Do you like the crowd on your side, or do you prefer the bad boy image? Slam your racket to the ground, argue calls, pump up the crowd and talk to your racket. How you play is up to you.

Xbox Live enabled, “Top Spin” is truly a global tennis experience. Play against the best and climb worldwide ladders to achieve the much-coveted No. 1 online ranking. Along the way, “Top Spin” encourages you to take risks to beat your opponents. Just like on the real courts, players are searching for “the Zone,” where every forehand, backhand and overhead slam overpowers the individual on the other side of the net.

“Tennis games have always been lacking the intensity and realism of playing on center court,” said Matthew Seymour, producer for Top Spin at Microsoft Game Studios. “’Top Spin’, with all its features and gameplay, is the complete tennis experience for all gamers who want nothing less than the world’s No. 1 ranking. It is an excellent addition to an already stacked line-up of sports titles exclusive for Xbox.”

Xbox (http://www.xbox.com/) is Microsoft's future-generation video game system that delivers the most powerful games experiences ever. Xbox empowers game artists by giving them the technology to fulfill their creative visions as never before, creating games that blur the lines between fantasy and reality. Xbox is now available in North America, Japan, Europe, Mexico and Australia.

Xbox Live is the first comprehensive, online game arena fully dedicated to fast-action broadband gaming experiences. Xbox Live will allow gamers to play multiplayer Xbox games with other gamers everywhere via a high-speed Internet connection. With a built-in hard drive and Ethernet port, the Xbox console was built from the ground up to be an online gaming system so there’s no need to buy additional peripherals.

Xbox Live will enable all gamers to find and play with their friends easily; talk to other players during game play through the Xbox Communicator headset; and download current statistics, new levels and characters to their Xbox hard drives.

Leading Broadband Providers Are Ready For Microsoft’s Xbox Live Online Game Service

10 U.S. and Three Canadian Providers to Help Usher in New Era
For Online Video Games Starting Nov. 15

REDMOND, Wash. — Oct. 30, 2002 — Microsoft Corp. today announced that 10 U.S. and three Canadian broadband service providers will be the first to support the Microsoft® “Xbox™ Compatible” program, making it easy for consumers to identify high-speed service plans that deliver great experiences for Xbox Live. Xbox Live, which launches in the United States and Canada on Nov. 15, is the ultimate online game arena that allows gamers to play games with each other, talk while they play using the Xbox Communicator headset, and download new content to keep games fresh.

Representing nearly 80 percent of the combined U.S. and Canadian broadband markets by the end of the year, the current list of “Xbox Compatible” broadband service providers includes Bell Canada, BellSouth Corp., Charter Communications Inc., Comcast Corp., Cox Communications Inc., EarthLink Inc., MSN®, Qwest Communications, Rogers Cable Inc., SBC Communications Inc., TELUS Corp., Time Warner Cable’s Road Runner service and Verizon Communications.

According to J Allard, general manager of the Xbox platform at Microsoft, while Xbox Live is designed to work well with most high-speed Internet services, the “Xbox Compatible” service providers are working with Microsoft to help ensure a great user experience on Xbox Live for customers.

“‘Xbox Compatible’ service plans help ensure that playing Xbox Live games across these plans will be quick, simple and hassle-free,” Allard said. “Together with ‘Xbox Compatible’ broadband providers, we’re doing the heavy lifting on the service so customers can focus on playing fast-action games. As the only all-broadband gaming service with the support of leading providers, Xbox Live is uniquely positioned to help propel online gaming forward while driving adoption of broadband services by gamers.”

“Online video game services such as Xbox Live give consumers another compelling reason to choose Verizon Online high-speed Internet access this holiday season,” said John Wimsatt, vice president of marketing for Verizon Advanced Services. “Only broadband can give video gamers the fast-action play they expect.”

“Customers want an Internet service that lets them do everything on the Web better and faster — from playing games to banking and more — and Comcast high-speed Internet service does just that,” said Greg Butz, vice president of marketing and business development for Comcast Online. “Now, when customers see the ‘Xbox Compatible’ logo in stores, kiosks or on Comcast Web sites, they’ll know that they’ll get the most robust gaming experience on our network.”

“Xbox Live is poised to deliver a truly revolutionary online gaming experience, and is one of the many ways that we are able to maximize our robust IP network to deliver advanced entertainment services,” said Steve Gorman, director of marketing for residential data services at Cox Communications. “When you combine Xbox Live with the power of a broadband connection, gamers can have it all: the excitement of Xbox games and the thrill of playing with friends and family in real time, whether they are across the street or across the country.”

“Xbox Compatible” broadband service providers and their plans may display the “Xbox Compatible” logo for their retail offerings at outlets nationwide, and several providers are expected to create marketing programs supporting Xbox Live. Microsoft also will continue working with other broadband service providers to add more service plans to the “Xbox Compatible” program.

At launch, more than 7,000 U.S. and Canadian retail outlets will begin selling the Xbox Live Starter Kit for an estimated retail price of $49.95 (U.S.)/$79.99 (CDN). For the average price of a new game, the kit includes a one-year subscription to Xbox Live, the highly anticipated Xbox Communicator headset, and online trial versions of THQ®’s “MotoGP” and “Whacked!™” from Microsoft Game Studios, so gamers can start playing with their friends right away. All Xbox units come with a built-in Ethernet port and hard drive, enabling any Xbox owner to plug into Xbox Live through a high-speed Internet service provider. Retail programs will be supported by a multimillion-dollar marketing campaign that will include advertising, retail communications and promotional activities.

The Xbox Live service is scheduled to launch a beta program in Europe and Japan this year, with full retail launches early in 2003.

[Behind the Scenes] Davilex Uses NetImmerse to Transform Knight Rider into Interactive 3D Game - posted by Andy Grieser at 9:34 am CDT

Davilex Uses NetImmerse to Transform Knight Rider into Interactive 3D Game

HOUTEN, Netherlands, October 29, 2002 -- Fans of American TV are revving up for the return of two of the most popular action heroes of the 1980s, Michael Knight and his high-tech supercar, KITT. The crime-fighting duo of man and machine are returning in Davilex’s Knight Rider , a racing/adventure game for PC and PS2 slated for European release next month.

Davilex used NDL’s NetImmerse graphics engine and toolkit to create the familiar characters and scenery featured in the original TV series starring David Hasselhoff. Along with co-star KITT, the Knight Rider game includes secondary figures from the television show, such as Devon, Bonnie, Garth, KARR and Goliath.

Driving an Icon

Knight Rider allows players to get behind KITT’s wheel for 10 original missions on 15 top-class tracks, combining elements of action and adventure with high-speed racing. Gamers use the Pontiac Trans Am’s advanced features, such as Turbo Boost, Ski Mode, Night Vision, Microwave Jammers, Super Pursuit, and Surveillance Mode, to fight criminals and protect innocent civilians.

“The Knight Rider television show achieved iconic status,” says Lambert Wolterbeek Muller, chief technology officer at Davilex. “Anyone who’s seen the show wants to drive KITT, and we couldn’t let them down.”

To further that end, Davilex had 10 to 15 developers, artists, designers and quality-assurance personnel working on the Knight Rider game for nearly a year. The graphic artists used an in-house editor and 3ds max to create the familiar characters and cars from the television show. The team relied heavily on NDL’s MaxImmerse plug-in to export and optimize its content building blocks and high-level objects.

Put on your fairy wings - Xicat soon to release Zanzarah!

Ft. Lauderdale , Fla. – Oct. 29, 2002 – Xicat Interactive blurs the line between fantasy and reality with the release of Zanzarah, due out Nov. 19.

Teetering on the edge of chaos, Amy must wield her magical powers and train her fairies to save Zanzarah.

Playable demos, new screen shots and videos are available, letting you catch a glimpse of the beautiful world of Zanzarah, Amy, the heroine and her band of battle fairies. For an in-depth look into Zanzarah, its lead producer Leonard Kohs is available for interview.

[PC Gaming] Wilco Ships Airport 2002 Vol. 1 - posted by Andy Grieser at 9:30 am CDT

WILCO SHIPS ‘AIRPORT 2002 VOL. 1’ -- NEW FLIGHT SIMULATOR 2002 ADD-ON WITH BRAND NEW ANIMATION TECHNOLOGY
Features First-Ever 3D Cockpit with Active Panel; Movie Preview on Wilco Website

DROGENBOS, BELGIUM (October 29, 2002) -- After three successful editions of its Airport 2000 scenery for virtual pilots, Wilco Publishing is set to release Airport 2002 Volume I, the latest addition to its franchise and first add-on for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2002.

Scheduled for November 6 release, the new title features seven all-new 3D airport models powered by exclusive new Wilco technology called FS NAT (New Animation Technology) that delivers more complex animations, more static and dynamic objects, more sounds, and higher resolution than any other add-on today, without noticeable impact on PC performance.

This means that wheels on the ground vehicles turn, doors and cargo bays open and close, jetways extend and retract, and much more all in the proper sequence. There is also an active 3D cockpit allowing all switches and buttons in the program’s Boeing 737-700 to be controlled from the Virtual Cockpit view rather than requiring simmers to switch to a 2D flat panel. No other add-on offers these capabilities.

A movie showcasing the title’s capabilities can be seen at www.wilcopub.com . The FSNAT manual is also available online.

Airport 2002 Volume I includes precise recreations of the world’s seven busiest airports: Paris Charles de Gaulle, London Heathrow, Munich International, Chicago O’Hare, Los Angeles International, Atlanta Hartsfield, and Dallas Fort-Worth International. (The Munich and Texas airports are new to the series.) Highlights include:

· Step-by-step animations Thanks to FS NAT, all activity outside the aircraft is displayed in dynamic detail. Simmers can hear the engines shut down after landing, see the jetway moving toward the aircraft, and observe ground vehicles go through their paces with realistic motions ranging from docking to unloading, and so on.

· Active 3D cockpit Building on the capabilities of FS2002’s enhanced virtual cockpit, the new Wilco scenery adds the ability to fly its Boeing 737-700 directly from the 3D view. There is no need to switch to a 2D flat panel to turn on the autopilot, grab the throttle, or consult the FMC. Simmers can pan and zoom all around the cockpit, using the mouse or shortcuts to reach preferred views in a flash.

· Active 3D cabin with pilot mobility The pilot can walk, rest and sit in the cabin before returning to the cockpit a first in PC-based flight sims.

· New sound effects Animations are accompanied by directional 3D sound effects for the first time. Simmers can hear gates moving into position, truck doors slamming, engines cranking, and other noises in sync with the relevant actions.

· Realistic night lighting effects Ground vehicles are illuminated and lit at night, complete with white backup lights and red ambulance warning lights. Other airport activity is also illuminated for day/night differentiation.

· More graphic elements Each airport depicts more aircraft liveries, airport buildings, gates, roads, trees, street signs and other objects in greater detail than in any previous edition, with reproductions based on Wilco’s exclusive behind-the-scenes visits. Building resolutions in particular are so high that the images are indistinguishable from photographs. There also is more ground vehicles, including catering, fuel, fire, police, baggage and maintenance vehicles as well as passenger buses.

· Highly detailed 737 Passenger doors, the hydraulic undercarriage, flaps, rudders, ailerons, spoilers, reversers, cargo hatches and wheels are fully animated. Each instrument panel replicates its real counterpart down to the locations and sizes of the gauges. The FMC includes flight plan management, editable leg data, fictive waypoints, flight plan progress actuated in real time, and more.

Airport 2002 Volume 1 is sold through computer stores or via the Wilco website and carries an MSRP of $34.95 (U.S.). It includes a manual including airport maps, Standard Instrument Departures (SIDs) and Standard Instrument Arrival Routes (STARs), plus charts permitting 1:1 scale printing. Minimum system requirements are Microsoft Flight Simulator 2002 and a 700 MHz Pentium with 128MB RAM. A Pentium 1400MHz with 256MB RAM and a 3D graphics accelerator card are recommended.
