Xbox :: Xbox pictures revealed - Editors not Impressed - posted by Erich Becker at 4:31 pm CDT

Even though it wasn't suppose to be shown till the 6th of this month, there are tons of pictures of the Xbox floating around the internet that show the console design and the controller design. Let me be the first so say that I am not impressed with what Microsoft has done. First of all the controller looks like a black version of the Dreamcast controller with the VMU hole replaced with a green ball.

The system itself looks like a Tivo with holes for controllers. I though something better could come from Microsoft, but alas, it seems that the Xbox will go the way of the PS2. We can't judge yet, until we see the games in action, but it seems like the hype will outweigh the system once again.

PC :: Womengamers rates Starlines, Inc. - posted by Erich Becker at 4:10 pm CDT

WomenGamers.Com member KaCee has written a review of the space strategy game, Starlines Inc.

"Had I paid for this game, I'd have demanded my money back by the end of the first few hours. At the time of writing this review, the Real.com purchase listing is offering a money-back guarantee. I suspect they might just get a lot of people taking them up on that. Frankly, the game isn't worth almost $20 (US) anyway, even aside from the errors. If this game ran more smoothly I'd rank it with general shareware-type games, which are often considerably cheaper than that. As it is, with the errors, it shouldn't even be considered a release version at all."

Good morning..part one of our year end round up is now online. We talk about everything PC and console...no awards are handed out in part one, just a lively discussion, like this:

What was the most original game (PC or console) of the Year 2000?

John Yan: Deus Ex. Provided a lot of solutions to a single puzzle, good story, good RPG elements, great graphics powered by the Unreal engine.

MED :: Dead or Alive Movie Planned? - posted by Erich Becker at 1:08 pm CDT

Core Magazine is reporting that Mindfire Entertainment has secured the movie rights to Dead or Alive from Tecmo. Mindfire Entertainment is also entering production of Sega's House of the Dead. Details are few and far between, but a script is certainly in production at the moment.

It seems that there is a recent trend in Hollywood to create movies based on video games, and do it right. With the exception of the retarded way Resident Evil is coming to the big screen, all of the announcements are coming from awesome series, and could turn out to be excellent. I do believe that we will have to wait and see what happens with Tomb Raider. If the movie is a success, then a new age of Video Game to Movie transitions could be upon us.

VAR :: First Grand Theft Auto 3 Screen Online - posted by Erich Becker at 1:03 pm CDT

German based, GTA Zone, has posted what is believed to be the very first screenshot of Rockstar's upcoming Grand Theft Auto 2. The screenshot shows an Police car at a standstill on a sidewalk with a body near the road.

What is interesting is the game has finally taken the road to true 3D and the game now has a Driver look to it. If it plays as well as its 2D brothers, GTA3 is sure to whoop some copper ass when it is released.

ESC :: Server Problems Plague Escape - posted by Erich Becker at 12:58 pm CDT

On behalf of the entire staff at ESC Magazine, I would like to appologize for the lack of updates to the site in the last couple of weeks. We have been under some severe server problems that has effected everything from our sites loading time (believe me it doesn't take THAT long for our page to load) to our email.

We are back on track now, and should have a new review and feature tonight. News updates should resume in normal order beginning next week. Due to the holiday season all of game companies and our sources are not announcing anything.

Again, thank you for your understanding, and please continue to enjoy ESC Magazine.

PC :: Project I.G.I. Review at XLGaming.com - posted by Erich Becker at 4:22 pm CDT

XLGaming has posted a review of Project I.G.I. from Eidos Interactive. Here is a snippet:

"I hope what I described above gives you an idea of the typical mission found within Project I.G.I. They follow the same pattern of infiltrate, steal, run away.’ Most of the variety lies in the way in which you start the mission and how the target base is laid out. There is a learning curve for PIGI but there is no training sequence, which I found to be a little odd for a game of this type. I got quite far with it as I’m a big fan of the sneak’em up genre but for the complete novice this game would be quite tough to get into, even at its easiest setting."

VAR :: Vote for Game of the Year at GR - posted by Erich Becker at 4:19 pm CDT

Game Rankings is announcing its first annual "Game of the Year" voting. Since Game Rankings has all of the games in its database, it only makes sense to allow users to vote on their favorites and let the cream rise to the top. Every site will have their year end "Game of the Year" awards, and almost all of them will be chosen by one or two of the sites editors. Why rely on just a few peoples' opinions when you can see what a large mass of gamers thought was the best of 2000 and more importantly, you can help decide which is best!

XBox :: Design to be Shown at CES? - posted by Erich Becker at 1:59 pm CDT

January 6-9, 2001 could be the date when the final console is shown to the massess. The Playstation 2 has launched, the Dreamcast is a year old, and Nintendo has shown us the Gamecube, now Microsoft must step up to the plate. A source recently told IGNXbox that Microsoft will show the console and controller designs at this years CES to be held in Las Vegas just after the new year.

A little over 3 weeks away, this could be the final hurdle before the all out advertising and full blown war break out.

DC :: Grandia III? - posted by Erich Becker at 1:55 pm CDT

While some of us have just gotten started on Grandia II, me included (damn is that game fun), it seems that UbiSoft may be giving gamers the news we want to hear.

UbiSoft, the games publisher, has registered the domain name "Grandia3.com". Does this mean that Grandia III is in development? "You will have to draw your own conclusion on that one." Is all source FGN Online got out of a Ubi spokesperson. I take it as a Yes, thank you.

PC :: nVidia buys up 3dfx's Assets - posted by Erich Becker at 1:52 pm CDT

In a unsurprising movie, Friday December 15th marked the end of 3dfx as a graphics card company in whole. All patents and pending technology patents held by 3dfx have been sold to nVidia for a sum of 70 million dollars and one million shares of stock.

The patent infringement cases that both parties were locked into are now being dismissed, and it seems that the company that took the computer world by storm in 1994 has finally reached the end of the line. This isn't an uncommon thing to happen in the computer world as companies go under all the time.

It is surprising that it was a company that revolutionized the market back in the mid-90's that bit the dust. 3dfx has been a house hold name in many gamer's dwellings for over 6 years. The Voodoo line of video cards showed us that Quake could be so much more without those nagging pixels all over the place.

In recent years, nVidia has risen to the top of the market with the powerhouses by the likes of TNT2, GeForce, and GeForce 2. 3dfx will be missed by those hardcore gamers that remember when Glide was the only option.

TV :: Nocturne: The Series? - posted by Erich Becker at 4:22 pm CDT

In a recent article posted about the upcoming Alice movie, there was a little bit of information that stood out. Nocturne, Terminal Reality's spooky exploits of the one they called Stranger, is set to make a TV Series debut. This could be very much more than a rumor considering the one hour pilot for the series is suppose to be in the works at this very moment.

Thanks to Daily Radar for the tip.

DC :: Infogrames Dreamcast Line Up 2001 - posted by Erich Becker at 3:55 pm CDT

Here is a short list of Infogrames upcoming planned Dreamcast releases.

"Infogrames has three Dreamcast titles on the books for the near future. A new product lineup sheet from the company pins down Stunt GP and Unreal Tournament to Q1 2001, and Alone In The Dark: The New Nightmare to Q2 2001."

Thanks go out to Daily Radar for the scoop.

PC :: Quake III Team Arena Available Friday - posted by Erich Becker at 3:22 pm CDT

Reported last week by a number of webistes, Quake III Team Arena is finished and has gone gold. The game should be available at your favorite retailer as early as Friday December 15th.

The game features extensive team play in the form of a superior capture the flag mode. The one flag capture the flag mode is also noteworthy, as is the Harvester mode.

By all means, if you like any online team based game, you need to pick up Team Arena. I have been playing the demo for a better part of a week, and its well worth the money.

NGC :: Perfect Dark 2 for Launch? - posted by Erich Becker at 3:16 pm CDT

I know that most of you might have read this story on Friday, but since we don't update news on Friday's or Saturday's I get to report it now.

According to IGNCUBE Perfect Dark 2 is set to be a launch game for Nintendo's highly touted GameCube console. This rumor does have some validity because of the Joanna Dark render that was part of the GameCube Demo reel at Spaceworld 2000.

Further more, IGNCUBE is also reporting that Rare has devoted more than half of its internal teams into the creation of this game, and could explain the recent delays of Conker, and Dinosaur Planet. With work going on as far back as six months, the title has a good shot at being released at launch. Now only if we knew when that would be...

Thanks to IGNCUBE for the information.

ESC :: Red Alert 2 Review Posted - posted by Erich Becker at 4:35 pm CDT

Here at ESC, we never slow down. There are tons and tons of things for us to do, and get done. Today we post our review of Westwood Studios' Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2. Reviewer Garret Romaine gave the game a very high 9 out of 10 ESC Key Rating. Here is a snippit:

"Like other entries in the best-selling Command & Conquer series, Red Alert 2 is based on all-out war between the Allies and Soviet Russia. Allied forces rely on their technology and firepower, whereas Soviet tactics emphasize their investigation into paranormal and psychic warfare. But the differences are actually subtler than brains vs. brawn or honor vs. terror. Where the Allies use spies, Soviets use terrorists. Where the Allies use Harrier jets, the Soviets launch Kirov zeppelins. And where Soviets unleash terror drones to infiltrate machinery, Allies send out dolphins to patrol the ocean blue."
