"What do you get when you combine cartoon characters, Simon Templar, and solid platforming action? One devious Thevious Raccoonus. Sly Cooper & The Thevious Raccoonus, to be precise. One criticism of the PS2 console from certain quarters has been its lack of any decent platform titles. Games such as Jax & Daxter and Ratchet & Clank have helped alleviate this condition somewhat, and Sly Cooper goes a step further, giving platform gamers something to sink their teeth into."

The first expansion pack to the critically acclaimed Wolf3D follow-up, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, has been canceled by id Software and Activision because the single player component wasn't living up to the expectations of the developer and publisher.

While this comes as bad news for gamers, those same gamers can rejoice in the fact that Activision will release the multiplayer component of the game as a free add-on pack.

Here is a description of the multiplayer component straight from Activision:

"In Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory Axis and Allied teams do battle in traditional single scenarios, or wage war through a series of linked scenarios in a totally new campaign mode. During combat players gain experience and skill, and through battlefield promotions are awarded additional abilities that remain persistent across an entire campaign. Additionally, new character classes like the covert operative class as well as an enhanced engineer allow teams to perform reconnaissance, steal enemy uniforms, and construct battlefield structures and military installations in the midst of combat to gain tactical advantages for their team. All new game modes, maps and communication abilities require players and teams to develop advanced strategies and tactics in the struggle for front line domination."

Interstellar Trader 2 Goes Gold, Demo Released

Game projected to ship in early March, Demo now available for download.

Cary, NC, February 13, 2003 - Shrapnel Games announced today that Stormcloud Creations' Interstellar Trader 2 has gone Gold. The game should be ready to ship in Early March. For more information about Interstellar Trader 2 visit Shrapnel Games website at www.shrapnelgames.com.

Tim Brooks, President of Shrapnel Games, said, "We are looking forward to the release of Interstellar Trader 2. This is one of those games that you keep coming back to play over and over again. Designer Derek DiBenedetto has come up with one of those rare designs that people just love. We are already receiving positive comments about this game engine."

Interstellar Trader 2 is the sequel to the original strategy simulation Interstellar Trader (available in the Thunder Pack Platinum four pack available from Shrapnel Games) where you become the owner of a start-up merchant business in outer space. You do this by traveling from planet to planet in the galaxy, buying and selling items in the various marketplaces. Just look at what this game has to offer:

    - Improved, more realistic economic engine, with a randomly generated supply/demand system for the galaxy every time you play. Item prices change constantly during the game, so you have to keep on your toes. More items available for trade at each planet.
    - Now 10 planets to visit, instead of 6! Each planet can even have individual modifiers to its economic condition.
    - You can choose your ship, upgrade its gas tank, cargo capacity, and even add NEW unique weapons to it to fight the nasty Pirates. Ships also now have Durability ratings, and wear down over time.
    - 4 Different pirate clans have different combat strengths and priorities as far as taking money or items from you if they win.
    - Pick up passengers, collect fares, buy toll booths to the various planets and get paid for each visitor to the planet.
    - Visit the prime minister of each planet for various benefits, purchase Pirate contracts for a temporary peace time.
    - Purchase and build your own fleet of escort ships from 3 different choices to assist you in fighting the Pirates.
    - NEW IMPROVED combat engine, with more realistic outcomes and more direct choices for the player to make, including self-destructing your ships to use as weapons, new Luck modifiers, using the Suicide Volley weapon on your ship for damage multipliers, and using your installed weapons against the Pirates.
    - NEW Special encounters: Play games at the Galactic Casino to win credits, make deals with Rogue Merchants from other galaxies on rare items, and more random events than before!
    _ And much more.

Interstellar Trader 2 retails for $19.95 but is available for pre release ordering from Shrapnel Games' e-Store, the Gamers Front (www.gamersfront.com), at a 15% discount until February 25th. The demo can be downloaded from the Shrapnel Games website at www.shrapnelgames.com.

[Online] Mindark, Telia Strike a Deal - posted by Andy Grieser at 6:50 am CDT

MindArk and Telia Strike a Deal

Gothenburg, Sweden - February 13th, 2003 - Telia, one of Europe's largest telecom and Internet providers, and MindArk, the creators of Project Entropia, have entered into an agreement where Telia provides MindArk with access to the Internet backbone at various locations around the world.

In addition to Internet backbone access, Telia provides server-hosting services for servers to be used for Project Entropia. Project Entropia is a three dimensional virtual universe available to download free of charge at http://www.project-entropia.com.

Jan Welter Timkrans, MindArk Managing Director, explains:

    * Project Entropia is aimed at interactive entertainment and features some unique facilities like a real economy with its own currency exchangeable to any major currency in the world.
    * Project Entropia incorporates vast 3D landmasses with cities and wilderness where participants from all corners of the world, represented by an avatar of their own design, may meet, explore, socialize, trade and interact in endless ways.
    * Project Entropia is dynamic and is continuously under development. The first continent is now complete and is soon to be followed by the first complete planet. Space-travel, space stations and other planets will follow.

Since the gold release of Project Entropia on January 30, 2003, Telia has been hosting the server structure in its highly secure facilities in Stockholm.

Benny Iggland, MindArk Chairman, welcomes the improved Internet quality:

    * The Telia Internet backbone access is part of an important improvement of Project Entropia. While previously used connections to the Internet with up to 13 router jumps gave rise to noticeable delays in the system, what we call "lag", the Telia connection is considerably faster. The number of router jumps has been reduced to fewer than 6 due to the consistent layout of the Telia backbone.

MindArk expects the improved Internet quality will meet the acclaim of its users. Since Project Entropia was publicly launched January 30, the number of participants has increased steadily. The popularity of Project Entropia is shown by the fact that beta testers put in their own money in order to test the economy system during the test phases. Present payment patterns indicate that early adopters are prepared to pay several Euros per hour for the enjoyment of Project Entropia.

Project Entropia is designed to cater to up to one million simultaneous users in three server centers around the world. Expectations are for registered number of users to ultimately reach 25 million.

[PC] Microsoft Flight Simulator: A Century of Flight Announced - posted by Erich Becker at 9:52 am CDT

"Microsoft Flight Simulator: A Century of Flight" Commemorates 100 Years of Aviation History

"Flight Simulator" Franchise's 20th Anniversary Year Corresponds With Centennial of Flight Celebration

REDMOND, Wash. - Feb. 11, 2003 - As the world prepares to celebrate the 100th anniversary of powered flight, Microsoft Corp. today announced that "Microsoft® Flight Simulator: A Century of Flight" is in development and cleared for takeoff this July.

With "Microsoft Flight Simulator: A Century of Flight," the next milestone in the award-winning "Flight Simulator" franchise, Microsoft celebrates 20 years of developing and perfecting computer flight simulation. "A Century of Flight" allows aviation enthusiasts to experience history at the controls of historic aircraft, such as Charles Lindbergh's Ryan NYP "Spirit of St. Louis," the Douglas DC-3 and the world's first successful powered aircraft, the Wright Flyer.

New engaging features such as interactive multimedia provide a wealth of historical information on the planes that shaped aviation history and the pilots who flew them. Informed and insightful articles explain all there is to know about Microsoft's "Flight Simulator" and the 24 aircraft included in the software. "Microsoft Flight Simulator: A Century of Flight" also introduces an updated, dynamic weather system, enhanced automatically generated scenery (AutoGen) and detailed visual effects, improved Air Traffic Control functions, and 3-D interactive cockpits, as well as 15 modern aircraft, including the Boeing 777, the Beechcraft Baron and the Robinson R22 helicopter.

"Launching 'A Century of Flight' in conjunction with a historical milestone as monumental as the invention of powered flight is an exhilarating, once-in-a-lifetime experience for all of us on the 'Flight Simulator' team," said Bruce Williams, product planner at Microsoft Aces Studios. "There are a lot of organizations celebrating the centennial of flight, but 'Century of Flight' empowers people to get into the cockpit of legendary aircraft such as the Wright Flyer and the 'Spirit of St. Louis' to feel what it was like to actually fly those planes."

When "Microsoft Flight Simulator: A Century of Flight" launches this July, Microsoft will mark flight's 100th anniversary by participating with the Experimental Aviation Association (EAA) in a yearlong celebration, Countdown to Kitty Hawk. A touring pavilion honoring aviation heroes and innovations will land in cities across the country, beginning this April at Sun 'N Fun in Lakeland, Fla. The pavilion will house a virtual 1903 Wright Flyer with which guests can experience the new "Flight Simulator" software, stepping back in time and recapturing the feeling of the first flight of Wilbur and Orville Wright on the sand dunes of Kitty Hawk, N.C. Would-be pilots operate the "aircraft" from a horizontal hip cradle, using hand levers and a shifting hip mechanism to control virtual takeoffs and landings in front of a giant panoramic projection screen.

    Availability

"Microsoft Flight Simulator: A Century of Flight" will be available on PC at leading retailers nationwide including Best Buy, Electronics Boutique and Circuit City Stores Inc. in July 2003 for an estimated retail price of $54.95 (U.S.)* and is rated "Teen."
